Best Marketplaces To Sell WordPress Themes & Plugins

No doubt, WordPress is the king of website creation. More than one fourth of the whole websites in this universe are made of WP (including Orion stars where Aliens build WordPress themes). Sound interesting huh? Well, not all credit goes to the WP company, but more. Behind the scene is the gigantic WP themes and plugins gallery. Hundreds of thousands of web designers and developers has built and published around millions of WP themes and plugins. Including free and premium, off course premium things  are best, they sell their stuffs in many marketplaces. Now, if you are a designer or developer or both, this article is for you to check if you can sell your next premium WP theme in those marketplaces. We are featuring most popular and reliable 11 marketplaces to sell themes and plugins.

CodeCanyon

CodeCanyon is the most popular plugin marketplace of them all. Currently, I sell actively my plugins on CodeCanyon (check my portfolio here), because it offers the most traffic of active customers, and also, they have a competitive commission, if you manage to become an elite author (sell more than 75000$ on the market).

Followed by ThemeForest, it’s also a sister concern of Envato pty. They have the largest collection of plugins for all kinds of website.

Features:

  • Commission varies in function of the gross amount of your sales (+ static author fee of 5$) – (same as ThemeForest from above).
  • Payments are processed at the end of each calendar month and paid out on the 15th of the following month via PayPal or Payoneer.
  • Plugin approval requires 2 weeks.

Pros of Using CodeCanyon to Sell Your Plugins:
• Publicity for your plugin.
• A large customer base to tap into.
• If you manage to work your way up their rankings, commissions are very competitive.
• An established marketing and distribution channel.
• If you create quality items, offer quality support, and CodeCanyon likes your items, they will promote your items for free, in their marketing campaigns.

Cons of Using CodeCanyon to Sell Your Plugins:
• CodeCanyon is a highly competitive market.
• Brand recognition is difficult (because of the above).
• You’re bound by the CodeCanyon’s terms.
• Communication with clients is only possible via CodeCanyon.
• If you don’t plan selling serious plugins on CodeCanyon, commissions will be relatively high.

ThemeForest

ThemeForest is the most popular theme marketplace so far. Envato group is the mother company of ThemeForest along with 9 other marketplaces. They are providing the largest volume of WordPress, HTML5, E-commerce and other CMS templates. It has a huge traffic, for sure the largest among all similar online marketplaces. If you want to make a good business with your selling, this might be a good start. It has mostly the same pros and cons as CodeCanyon from above.

Features:

  • Commission varies in function of the gross amount of your sales (+ static author fee of 5$).
  • Payments are processed at the end of each calendar month and paid out on the 15th of the following month via PayPal or Payoneer.
  • HTML5 templates requires 3 weeks of review time where WP or E-commerce requires 2 weeks

For all the above marketplaces, you can assume a “default con” being the lack of traffic that published items get (compared to CodeCanyon/ThemeForest).

Shape Bootstrap

The fastest growing marketplace ever. I’m proud to say that, this top notch marketplace is from Bangladesh. Moreover it is a sister concern of Joomshaper, the best Joomla Template provider right now. Started from 2015 and they have nearly half a million of community members right now. So this should be a great start for you.

Features:

  • A seller receives exclusively 60-80% of the total sales amount where most marketplaces offer 50-75%. As a non-exclusive seller, you will get 40% of sales value.
  • Payments are processed at the end of each calendar month and paid out on the 15th of the following month via PayPal or Payoneer.
  • They have approval system for quality assurance.
  • HTML5 templates requires 1 weeks of review time where WP or E-commerce requires 2 weeks.

It’s a good choice if you take a look to their site.
