Simple Procedure to Fix ” Are You Sure You Want to Do This ” Error

What is “Are you Sure You Want To Do This” Error means?

Are You Sure You Want To Do This ? ” error message is a response from the server reporting the error existence. While performing some tasks in WordPress admin and if you are requesting the server for some page or the other, then the server sends the response in the form of the Error message.

When this Installation Error occurs?

This error commonly occurs when PHP Configuration in your hosting does not support suitable conditions to allow WordPress Uploads and Installations.

Nonce:

Before going to know about the Error, Every user must know about the Nonce. Nonce is a special security key or number which are generated by a theme, plugin, or the core files. These keys will be appended to URLs while performing an admin action in WordPress for verification purpose.

Why this Error Occurs?

The error usually occurs when WordPress checks for the Nonce in the admin URL. If it is not able to verify the security tokens, the error displays. Improper use of Nonce by the WordPress plugins and themes will also lead to this Error ‘ Are you sure you want to do this ?’.

  • Creating tags or categories.

  • You selected an incorrect file while trying to upload a theme or plugin.

Clear the browser Cache

It is not always a fix that works, but sometimes clearing your browser cache can also resolve this error. If this does not work, you can try clearing your browser cookies as well.

Deactivate all the plugins

A bad plugin or improperly coded plugin can raise the issue in the WordPress. To avoid the error, deactivate all your plugins. For this, you need to connect through FTP.If the error does not appear again, then this means that one of the plugins on your website was causing the issue. To figure out which plugin was causing the issue, go back to your FTP client and rename

Now, search for the wp-content folder. Inside this folder, you can see the plugins folder.

Rename the plugins folder with any other name like plugins.deactivated and check.

With this, the error disappears if it is caused due to the plugins of your website. After that visit the plugins page in your WordPress admin area and activate the plugins one by one. Repeat this until you find the plugin causing the ” Are you sure you want to do this ?” WordPress Error message.

Investigate Themes

Sometimes, Website plugins would not create the Error, then it seems the current theme may be the convict. To check whether the theme is the cause of the error, deactivate your theme. To deactivate it, you need to follow the same process as you did for the plugin deactivation.

Log in to your account through FTP. Now find the wp-content and open it and search for the themes folder.

Now rename this folder as themes.deactivate. This will kick out the error if it is due to the theme you are using currently.

After this, log into your WprdPress admin area and go to  Appearance. There you can find Themes page. Give a click on it and you will see a notification that ‘The active theme is broken. Reverting to the default theme’. Now WordPress will start using the default theme like Twenty Thirteen for your website.

Now reload the page and check. if the error disappears, then the error is caused by the current theme that you are using for your site.

 Upload the Theme or Plugin carefully

Some theme or plugin packages often include the theme or plugin ZIP file along with other useful documents such as instructions, demo content, licensing information and other similar files. Because of these, the size of the file will be huge. So, Unzip the package. Find the plugin or theme file among the extracted files and try uploading.

Increase your PHPMemory Limit

Increasing the PHP memory limit can flush the error occurred in your WordPress Website. Expanding the memory can be done in three different ways. Check the three methods to find the simple method.

Method 1: Updating php.ini or php5.ini file
      1. Log into your Cpanel
      2. Search for Files section and select FileManager. Make sure that the Show Hidden Files checkbox had been checked.
      3. click on “Go“.
      4. Select the wp-admin folder. Inside this, you can find a file called php.ini or php5.ini. Note: if you don’t find this file in your wp-admin, create a blank file and name it as php.ini. If this does not work for you then, rename it as php5.ini.
      5. Now add the following code in the file.
        1upload_max_filesize = 1000M
        2post_max_size = 2000M
        3memory_limit = 3000M
        4file_uploads = On
        5max_execution_time = 180
      6. Now click on save and close the file.
      7. Clear your browser cache and try reloading the page.
Method 2: Editing the .htaccess files

If you feel the above procedure difficult or if the method 1 does not do the trick then, try editing the .htaccess file. For this, you need

      1. log into your Cpanel.
      2. Select Filemanager.
      3. Search for the public_html directory.
      4. In this directory, you can see the .htaccess file.
      5. Select the file and give a right click on it.
      6. Select edit option and add the following code after the last line in the file.
1php_value upload_max_filesize 1000M
2php_value post_max_size 2000M
3php_value memory_limit 3000M
4php_value max_execution_time 180
5php_value max_input_time 180

7. Save your file and close. Don’t forget to clear your browser cache before you reload the page.

Method 3: Amending wp-config.php file

In this method, we follow Editing your wp-config.php file to Increase the PHP Memory Limit.

1.Login to your Cpanel and click on FileManager.

2. Go to public_html and find the wp-config file.

3. Give a right click on the file and select edit.

Add the following code line at the very bottom of the file.

Upload core files

The corrupted core files can also rise this error “Are you sure you want to do this?”. So to get rid of this error, you should delete the core files and upload the new core files. For this, you need to follow the steps.

      1. Login to Cpanel and select FileManager.
      2. Go to the root directory.
      3. Delete all the files except wp-config.
      4. Download the new version of WordPress.
      5. Now upload the new WordPress core files to the current WordPress.

Reset Security Keys

A non-encrypted password like ” WordPress or your_name ” can be easily broken by a hacker , but an unpredictable, randomly generated and encrypted password such as “88a7da62429ba6ad3cb3c76a09641fc” takes years for him to frame up the right combination. Therefore, You should reset WordPress Security keys to increase security and to avoid the error “Are You Sure You Want to Do This”.

For this, you to modify your wp-config.php.

      1. Connect to your website through FTP.
      2. Go to your root directory and search for the wp-config.php file. Search for 8 security keys. Initially, the values are set as shown below.

2define('SECURE_AUTH_KEY', 'put your unique phrase here');
3define('LOGGED_IN_KEY', 'put your unique phrase here');
4define('NONCE_KEY', 'put your unique phrase here');
5define('AUTH_SALT', 'put your unique phrase here');
6define('SECURE_AUTH_SALT', 'put your unique phrase here');
7define('LOGGED_IN_SALT', 'put your unique phrase here');
8define('NONCE_SALT', 'put your unique phrase here');

Replace ‘put your unique phrase here’ with some values as shown in below example. Save and upload your wp-config.php file. Now try reloading your browser to flush the Common install error. This will help you in eradicating the error message ” Are you sure you want to do this ?”.
