SEO best practice to avoid Google Penalties

I love using your service, it is really amazing what it can do. I'm just concern that I am not setting up my Echo RSS Support properly and would like to prevent being penalized for publishing duplicated content. My understanding is to have the '<b>Add "rel=canonical" Meta Tag To Generated Posts (Global):</b>' turned on in the Main Settings page. I hope I am right to assume that this item does NOT need to be checked in each of the 'RSS to Post Rules' since it is global. Could you let me know if there are other settings I MUST turn on or configure for best practice when it comes to not getting penalized?   - Thank you
