Meta description and content editor not working

I have all the settings set for the SEO meta description, but when I post new drafts, it's just taking the first couple sentences as my meta description.  i dont see the plugin doing anything at all for it. and when I run the content editior to add featured images to posts that don't have one, it doesn't do anything. can someone please help me with this, am I doing something wrong, or is the plugin just broken? and  i've watched all the tutorials and read the tutorials already.   Thanks
